Data Backup and Hard Disk (HDD) Solutions

While you use your computer everything seems fine. Until suddenly something is wrong. Nothing works anymore. And then suddenly you realize. This is it the ting you never wanted to confront. The computer is dead. The last backup is way to old and where is it. Slowly you feel how you start to feel week. You realize all that you might have lost.

There is nothing that can prepare you for that moment when you see that all is gone. A short time ago all was fine in your world but now things have changed. Important work is lost. Pictures gone. Invoices gone, Emails gone. In disbelief you ask yourself what happened. You know what happened. You did not back up.

Welcome to the club. Backup is such a pain. Why do it? Now you know.

At WebMakers Inc we have had backup issues ourselves. We had lost our server due to a total hard disk failure. Luckily we had a lots of backups but they where bits and pieces. Email here, Data 1 there, Data 2 here. We had notes about configuration settings and users lists. But it was like a huge puzzle to put it all together again. And that on a production box.

So after such an ordeal we went and started to look at true solutions. Solutions that work and where we would not have to piece meal everything together again.

One solution we found was Norton's ghost software. We like the idea of mirroring drives. We next stumbled over a Tec cast that introduced us to Acronis. This is a software solution similar to Norton's ghost but it runs right in windows and you can keep working.

We have started to perform extensive test with the Acronis software and will be setting up more backup and hard disk restore procedures. We have currently worked with XP OS clients. We have had very good results with the product. One thing that did not work as expected was the manual resizing of partitions. The automatic one worked just fine. This is a minor issue. One we can live with.

Next we will be working on the Windows Server tool from Acronis. They do offer a free trail version of the software.

At the moment we think that the Acronis software is a great solution if you know how to install Hard Disks and have other more then basic hardware and software skills. On the Acronis website the software is marketed to the regular users who can get some use out of it but the have the full function we do find more experience is needed.

That is why we do recommend working with an IT professional. The ongoing maintenance is easy. But the setup and if a crash occurs should be left to the professionals.
