VoIP (Voice over IP)
What is VoIP/Internet Voice?
The FCC defines VoIP as follows: VoIP allows you to make telephone calls using a computer network, over a data network like the Internet. VoIP converts the voice signal from your telephone into a digital signal that travels over the internet then converts it back at the other end so you can speak to anyone with a regular phone number. When placing a VoIP call using a phone with an adapter, you'll hear a dial tone and dial just as you always have. VoIP may also allow you to make a call directly from a computer using a conventional telephone or a microphone. To see more info from the FCC about VoIP go to http://www.fcc.gov/voip/
VoIP has many advantages when used in combination with your traditional phone Service (PSTN =Publicly Switched Telephone Network). VoIP takes advantage of the increased avalability of broad band internet service in North America and World Wide. Companies like Packet8 offer these new services. They often bundel them with free Unlimited* North America calling and very affordable long distance to the rest of the world.
VoIP is a technology that is also used at WebMakers Inc.
Our experience with VoIP: To give you a some background. In IT things usualy never work the way that they are sold. That is why we at WebMakers Inc. are needed. So when a client of mine approached me in regards to a VoIP solution that he had bought and was not able to install and therefore asked WebMakers Inc. to set it up, we scheduled in two to three hours - just to be sure :). Now as it turned out it was not that the client was not able to get the VoIP to work. It was that the router that he had bought was DoA (Dead on Arrival). Now in no way was the client able to detect such a DoA. But after we got that sorted out and set him up with a Wireless Router, we went to proceed with the setup of the VoIP. And see there. 1 2 3. Just like they had said it would, it worked. We at WebMakers Inc. ordered a Packet8 VoIP right that day and have used it ever since.
VoIP services are truly great additions to your comunication needs. They might not be totaly out of the starting blocks yet but the services bundled with them make up for some of the short term, "first movers disadvantages" :).
