Backup Solutions

Backup Solutions

There are a myriad of different Backup Solutions. Which one is right for you might not be right for the next business.

Some of the criteria that a backup solution is based up on are:

·  How much data is there
·  When will the backup happen
·  Is it supervised
·  Can the backup media be changed on a regular interval
·  How fast is the Internet connection
·  What type of data is being stored
·  Will the data be compressed for storage
·  How will the backed up data be stored
·  Where will the backed up data be stored
·  Will there be data compression to reduce space
·  ...

There are Solutions that range from simple burning a CD to having a custom script that will copy the data to an external Hard Disk.

Simple the solutions are mostly the most costly as they need a lot of custom setup to get it started. But once they are up and running they are the most user-friendly.

Currently our favorite solution is one that really only needs a minimal user intervention. This solution is made up of external Hard Drives and a script that is customized to the clients needs. The reason way we like to back up to External Hard Disks is that the cost per MB is per low and that the size of the backup media is enormous. This allows us to backup the data uncompressed. Anybody who knows about compression knows that if the file gets corrupted then everything in the backup file can be lost. So when backing up uncompressed the worst case scenario is that one file is lost.

Another important fact for a successful backup is not just the backup solution but how the data is stored on the network. We have found that if the data is stored on a central File server and not on every client workstation, that the backup runs faster and that the implementations easier. The reason for it being easier is that we do not have to develop a script that needs to go to every workstation and pull the data from there.  Further if the data sits in one central location then the data will not have to pulled over the network which means speed increases and is also more reliable.
